Azonto is an original Ghanaian expressive dance and music form that was first called “Apaa” (which means work), and evolved in the working townships of Ghana.

However, the term ‘azonto’ (a name which was given to the dance by the people of Tema) was popularly used among Senior High School students became accepted by the larger population as the name for the dance, evolving among street communities in suburbs of Ghana’s capital Accra (namely Korle-Gonno, La and Chorkor) and in pubs, night clubs, & dance battles.

Azonto incorporates complex co-ordinated body movement and non-verbal communication in a rhythmic fashion in very few one-two timed steps. Just like most African dances, knee bending and hip movements are its foundation as the dancer adds in hand gestures mimicking their profession or every day activities such as ironing, washing, driving, boxing, grooming, praying, swimming, etc.

Azonto, when taught effectively can be learned within ten minutes and has captured the imaginations of millions around the world with price William pullign a few Azonto moves in janury this year some London based artists even flying over to Ghana to learn the moves.

What do I love about Azonto?

Generally, the dance reflects the creativity and rich sense of humour of the Ghanaian people. The dance, which is usually performed with an accompanying smile, seems to leave you very happy afterwards and you can’t help but want to share it and if there’s one thing this world needs more of, its a dose of joy.

The catchiest rendition of ‘Azonto’ – song AND dance – for me is probably the one by Fuse ODG Feat. Tiffany (**ProDuced by KILLBEATZ!**)

Watch it! Learn it … in under 10 minutes then share the fun and laughter all around!
